Oh dear. My presentation gown is in tatters because I was abducted by pirates on my way to the Presentation Room so I appologize for my wretched appearance. However, a haughty lord took it upon himself to negotiate with the pirates--happens these very same pirates supply him with contraband brandy--for my release and he gave me leave to use his household--his housekeeper was very kind, by the way--to tidy up, remove the mud, the twigs and leaves from my hair and so forth. Unfortunately, he had no fine ladies' clothing within his household so that I was obliged to tidy up my presentation gown as best as I could. But, nevertheless, I am here relatively unscathed. The wretched pirates did not make free with me other than to shove me into the mud when I bit their leader on his lower lip. I suppose that I am lucky to be alive.

Gracious, what an adventure, simone! It sounds very exciting. *envy* Was the haughty lord handsome? Tell!

Welcome to the forum! ;)

 at Simone.

The nearest to the Regency I have come is a somewhat abortive attempt at riding sidesaddle.

When I am not reading I am riding.

What was riding sidesaddle like? I'm curious to know, I've only ever ridden astride before.

QUOTE (Ehnel @ Nov 4 2005, 10:58 AM)
What was riding sidesaddle like? I'm curious to know, I've only ever ridden astride before.

According to all the 'experts' its supposed to feel very secure--but I didn't find it so.

It also made me very sore-despite the fact that I rode (and still ride) regularly.

I never got beyond 'walk trot and canter'--never felt the slightest desire to jump like that thanks--and I certainly would not have wanted to go hunting sidesaddle.

I suppose had I been given the choice of riding sidesaddle only or not riding at all--I might have 'tried harder'. ;).

hmmmm.... well, I escaped from Dominic, who wanted me to reread Devil's Cub forever.... this sounded very nice for the few first weeks but I couldn't think I can read one and the same book over and over again for long eternity... :D so I came in search of other books by Heyer with the hope that their characters are more reasonable and agreeable than Dominic.... at the moment Beauvallet is not allowing me to write anymore... he feels like dancing  so that's from me for now.... ;)

hello! new member to the boards and recent fan of heyer! i've read a handful of her books to date, and my favourite is The Grand Sophy. love heyer's sense of humour (her profound knowledge of the regency period goes without saying). also love how her secondary characters can steal the scene.

a bit more about me: i love to read, i can play the piano somewhat, and i live in a city with four defined seasons.

Welcome to the forum, dormiensa, it's nice to have you here! :) My favourite is The Grand Sophy too - Sophy's so FUN! And I'm with you on Heyer's sense of humour and secondary characters, so marvellous.

I hope you'll enjoy yourself here!

If you've got any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or one of the moderators!

Welcome, dormiensa! It's nice to see people getting to know Heyer's stories; they have stood the test of time and can captivate new readers while continuing to hold those (like me) who read them the first time many years ago.

I agree with your thought on secondary characters; they make Heyer's books even more charming and interesting - and humorous.

Hi I am not sure if anyone remembers me as I haven't been on for ever so long!!! I feel awful as I completely forgot about this forum  . I think it is because I have been rather busy this past year. It is no excuse though and I am very sorry. I am so happy that I rediscovered this forum and I am determined to post more. :)
